Packing for Europe in the fall or early winter is hard because the weather won't commit. You get sun one afternoon and five days of blowing rain the next.
The fix is a capsule wardrobe built to layer, so a change in forecast means adding one piece, not packing a second outfit.
In this video, Laurie of Travel Tips by Laurie, a pilot's wife who's always traveled carry-on only, shows how she built a 10-piece capsule for fall and winter in Europe that handles cobblestones, rain, and dinner out without overpacking...
1. Start With Shoes That Earn Their Space
The capsule runs on three shoes that cover every weather scenario: a slip-on loafer, a tall water-resistant boot, and a lightweight waterproof ankle boot.
This loafer has a no-slip tread for uneven pavement and airport floors. It folds flat to pack into a suitcase corner and comes with a snap-shut shoe bag.
The ultra-lightweight waterproof boot weighs less than a pound and has a grippy sole for packed snow or gravel.

Waterproof leg-warming protectors slip over your socks and turn the ankle boot into a two-in-one taller boot with no added weight.

The tall ADA boot stretches to fit wide calves and has a low heel for walking city streets, so it works for touring all day and then afternoon tea.

2. Build Around Two Bottoms
Every outfit here anchors to dark denim or a bottom that works everywhere. The alternative to denim is a black stretchy pant with a center seam that dresses up for an elevated dinner.

For long flights and active days, an athletic pant with a soft elastic waistband comes in three lengths; aim for the hem to hit the middle of your ankle bone.

On cold days, layer it over brushed-fleece waterproof leggings, which add warmth without bulk and have a wide, non-clinging waistband.
3. Layer Tops That Mix and Match
The top layers all pair with the same bottoms. A mock-turtleneck sweater works over any t-shirt underneath, short-sleeve striped cotton modal, merino wool, or long-sleeve.

Merino wool t-shirts aren't itchy or hot and machine wash fine, though you should air dry them.

This thin puffer vest cinches at the waist, has a removable hood, and packs down small.

Cashmere does the heavy lifting. It cuts cold fast but also regulates body heat, so you don't overheat in a stuffy bus or warm restaurant. Pick sweaters that all go with your denim and pants, then mix them across days.

4. Outerwear and Rain Backup
Three jacket options cover the range. This packable Quint jacket folds into its own zippered pocket.

A longer Bernardo jacket has backpack straps so you can go hands-free and stay cooler in warm shops.

This waterproof rain jacket has a detachable, cinchable hood and held up through five days of 55-degree blowing rain on a river cruise.
