From toxic lakes to lawless zones, these destinations are more than just “off the beaten path.”
Some places are off-limits for good reason. While the world is full of beautiful, bucket-list-worthy destinations, there are a few that are better admired from a safe distance.
These seven spots might look stunning on the surface — but each one comes with serious risks that even locals try to steer clear of.
1. Lake Natron, Tanzania
Looks like a painting, but will burn your skin off.

This bright red lake in East Africa looks surreal, but it’s no place for a swim.
With water temperatures reaching 140°F and an extreme pH level that can burn skin, Lake Natron is so toxic that animals unlucky enough to fall in can become calcified.
The surrounding region is remote and harsh — beautiful for photos, dangerous for explorers.
2. North Sentinel Island, India
The island that will kill you if you try to say hello

Located in the Bay of Bengal, this island is home to one of the world’s last uncontacted tribes.
The Sentinelese people have resisted outside contact for centuries — and Indian law prohibits anyone from approaching the island.
Visitors who’ve ignored this have faced deadly consequences. It’s not just illegal to visit — it’s life-threatening.
3. La Oroya, Peru
A town so toxic, birds fall from the sky.

A mining town high in the Andes, La Oroya has been labeled one of the most polluted places on Earth. Decades of heavy metal contamination have left the air and soil toxic.
Locals have experienced severe health issues, and the town’s environmental damage is so extreme, even short visits come with serious health warnings.
4. The Darién Gap, Between Panama & Colombia
The jungle that eats people alive.
This dense, roadless jungle is known for its lawlessness, dangerous wildlife, and smuggling routes.
Despite connecting two continents, it’s nearly impassable and considered one of the most dangerous places in the Western Hemisphere.
Travelers are strongly advised to avoid it — even experienced trekkers stay away.
5. Pripyat, Ukraine (Chernobyl Exclusion Zone)
A radioactive ghost town frozen in time.

The site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster still emits dangerous levels of radiation in some areas.
While certain parts of the Chernobyl zone are open for brief, guided tours, locals know to steer clear of the more contaminated zones.
Even a short exposure can be risky without proper precautions.
6. Kowloon Walled City (Historical), Hong Kong
The city with no laws — and no sunlight.

Before it was demolished in the 1990s, Kowloon Walled City was the most densely populated place on Earth — and essentially ran without law enforcement.
With over 30,000 people packed into one chaotic, maze-like block, it became a haven for crime, unlicensed dentistry, and makeshift everything. Locals feared it — and outsiders rarely dared enter.
7. Mount Merapi, Indonesia
When this volcano erupts, it doesn’t warn twice.

One of the most active volcanoes in the world, Mount Merapi erupts regularly, with deadly force.
While some hikers still attempt to summit it, locals living nearby know the signs of danger all too well. When this volcano blows, it gives very little warning — and few chances to escape.
Travel is about exploring the world — but it’s also about staying smart and safe. These places remind us that not every stunning destination is meant to be visited.
